Black Ice Becca Fitzpatrick Books Reviews
- Wow, what an intense book! As a fan of suspense and psychological thrillers (parts of this book reminded me of "Criminal Minds") with some steamy romance mixed in, I could hardly put this book down. I kept coming back to it at the earliest opportunity because I needed to know how it was going to end.
It took me a little while to warm up (pun intended) to Britt, but once I got past the seeming shallowness of her personality, she was easier to relate to and root for while fighting for her life in the frozen mountains. And I have to say, the descriptions of her journey through the woods was so ingenious that I found myself shivering in commiseration.
And then there's Mason. Also known as Jude. He was interesting, to say the least, and harder to pin down in terms of his goals for being in this situation. I doubted his intentions along with Britt, yet came to the conclusion that if really was a cold-blooded killer, he'd had plenty of opportunities to attack Britt. But he continued to look out for her, protect her. When Britt thought that he was the monster of the story, I thought she was nuts. I had a sneaking suspicion of who was really behind the murders, and when it was confirmed, the danger level for Britt and Jude skyrocketed.
I was glad for the epilogue; I thought it was a lovely way to wrap up the whole novel. And after reading a few reviews where people were labeling Britt as having Stockholm Syndrome... I could see why that would come up, but in my opinion, two people could meet under extreme circumstances and God (or fate or destiny or whatever you believe in) could use it the bring some light out of the darkness. That's how I choose to see Jude and Britt's relationship.
Great story, awesome setting, intense nail-biter. Read it! - Rating 4 stars
This was one exciting adventure that has so many twists and turns, you will be left wanting even more. While I don't think this is as good as Hush, Hush, I think Becca Fitzpatrick has done an excellent job at separating herself from the series, and showing her talent as an author. She has switched genres, and shown that she is definitely a competitor in different markets. Her writing (which is something I always loved about the Hush Hush series) is utterly fantastic, and you feel as if you are in the mountains, suffering the biting winds and intense cold along with the characters. I loved the mystery/thriller aspect, and it keeps the story interesting. However, I honestly think this is a story about a girl finding herself more than anything else. While this probably isn't what the original purpose of the book was, I thought it showed a girl who is put in an unfortunate and terrifying situation, and becoming a stronger, braver person because of it.
Originally when I started reading, I wasn't sure if I was going to like the story. Britt was getting on my nerves with how much she depended on the men in her life, and in the beginning she appeared a bit whiny. I kept getting frustrated at her character for not sticking up for herself with her best friend, Korbie, or with her ex-boyfriend (who is also Korbie's brother), Calvin. She was extremely foolish and irritating. You might be saying, "Wait...I thought you said you liked this story...." And I did. The thing with Britt's character is that when she starts off, she is very childish. However, throughout the story, she grows into her own, and becomes a very strong female lead. Britt is definitely not the same person at the end of the story as she was at the beginning. Ms. Fitzpatrick did an excellent job at crafting Britt's growth over the course of the story, and it was actually quite enjoyable to read and witness. Mason had me from the beginning. I will admit when we meet him again, I was leery of him, but as the story progressed, I started coming up with theories. Things weren't adding up with his character, and this led to another interesting aspect of this story, the mystery behind the characters. Every character in this book has something to hide (and I mean every character). Granted, I did figure out why Mason was there, but it still drove the story, and gave it that extra special something.
The setting was one of my favorite aspects about this entire story. The setting was extremely well described, and I truly felt like I was right there hiking along with the characters, desperate to find their way through the blizzard. There is a major twist towards the end, and if you pay close attention, you can figure it out. However, it is definitely a surprise if you don't figure it out (it's still shocking even if you had suspicions). I think the action at the end is another highlight of the book because it is where Britt truly steps up and shows just how far she has come.
While this book might not be for everyone, I highly recommend it for anyone who is a fan of Becca Fitzpatrick or just likes reading mystery/thriller novels. Becca Fitzpatrick delivers an action-packed story that is full of intense moments, and will leave you longing for more.
Happy reading ) - I have waited literally what feels like years for this book! I am a huge fan of this author and her haunting story telling. She hooked me with Patch and Nora's story in "Hush Hush" I mean you can't get much more bad boy than a fallen archangel right? Well, "Black Ice" doesn't disappoint. There is some serious sleuthing needed to vet out this story. So pay close attention!
Britt has the perfect spring break planned. She's going to spend the week hiking in the Teton's with her BFF and maybe just maybe get her ex Calvin to notice her again. She doesn't count on the freak blizzard that strands them on the road. Or the two gorgeous men who open the door to shelter for the night. Especially when they turn out to be so much more! This book had so many faucets that hit the ground running. By Chapter 5 you are knee deep in a mystery just begging to be solved. Britt is smart and she has a few tricks up her sleeves to get them off the mountain. Korbie is kinda the BFF from hell, one minute she's the sweet best friend the next she's a sneering mean girl trying to stake claim on one of the guys. Both girls are holding out for Calvin to rescue them. Then the guys take Britt and force her to lead them off the mountain. While she's trying to battle the elements she's also battling mixed emotions from Mason who is holding her hostage but is so gentle and caring he can't be what he seems. Besides the danger of the elements there's a serial killer on the mountain. Figuring out who to trust makes this book one of the best I've read in a long time! There are twists and turns and what the heck moments everywhere. By the time you've got it figured out your a chapter away from closing the book and it's not at all what you thought! Love love love it! This is a must read for the cold winter nights coming up! Then if this is the first book you ever pick up from this author go back and 1 click the rest! you will have your winter break reading covered!
