How to Self Publish a Book on Crush It on and Start Making Money Today! Audible Audio Edition Michael Zarcone Tony Acland Books Reviews
- There are many poorly written, practically worthless guides to self-publishing that only dispense the same few basic suggestions, but Michael Zarcone’s “How to Self-Publish a Book on †is in a class by itself. Yes, like many of the others, it’s got lots of grammatical errors, and it doesn’t do much beyond skimming the basics like recommending picking a good subject and using good keywords. But Zarcone actually goes so far as to spend an entire chapter suggesting that would-be self-publishers violate rules by paying for reviews, via the mechanism of what he calls a virtual assistant.
Apparently, virtual assistants will get glowing reviews for self-publishers… for a price. I won’t discuss how they do it or where to find them, but a look at the current reviews for “How to Self-Publish a Book on †show that Zarcone has quite a few five-star reviews, most of which don’t seem to mention anything specific about the book at all. Instead, these reviews bestow glowing and oddly written generalities like “It portrayed all the basic instruments in well ordered methodology.†But what bothers me, and what should bother any honest writer or reviewer on , is Zarcone’s rather cavalier attitude towards policies. In his view, “People want to think they are morally superior or that they are doing the ‘right’ thing by avoiding review swapping, but in reality, they are losing or not making money publishing their books.†Zarcone also states flat out that paying a virtual assistant to procure reviews is “the method that the pros use.†If that’s so, I have yet to see any other “pro†recommend this either in a book or an online post, and many of them warn would-be publishers about the practice, which is strictly against clear policy.
Zarcone then goes on to downplay more traditional ways of getting reviews, such as building email lists, saying that if writers “follow bobble heads online, you are sure to fail.†He then acknowledges that the practice of paying for reviews is against rules but argues that the chances of anyone getting caught are “slim to none.†I would caution anyone who is inclined to believe him to do a bit of research on the matter, and they will find out what does happen to people who buy reviews.
While I can’t give any sort of positive recommendation to an author who flat out advises people to break rules in order to sell on , I would point out that this book is atrocious in other regards as well. Although Zarcone recommends hiring virtual assistants, cover designers, and ghostwriters, he doesn’t have anything to say about copy editors, and it shows. Either he or his ghostwriter needs to brush up on proper English usage, as this text is often so muddled and filled with run-on sentences that it’s difficult to understand, for example “Many self-help ‘Gurus’ make long drawn out post on social media websites, You Tube is flooded with misinformation that it’s a comedy now.â€
Early in “How to Self-Publish a Book,†Zarcone says that his books make an average of $275 a month on . However, a look at the actual rankings shows that this claim may be a bit exaggerated. The book currently ranks about 250,000 in terms of sales, which, in fairness, is higher than many of the equally worthless guides of his competitors manage. However, that also translates to about two sales a week, not the level that he claims.
In terms of actual publishing advice, “How to Self-Publish a Book†isn’t the worst guide available, which is more a commentary on the woeful state of the competition rather than an endorsement of Zarcone’s work. His book is, however, the only one that says that the best way to succeed as a publisher is to break ’s rules and violate ’s policies because people who do so probably won’t get caught. Breaking the rules and hoping you don’t get caught is not a formula for long-term success, and neither is buying Zarcone’s book. - This book I read the title several times. I noticed the fonts, colors, and size of the letters and the image. Hmm, I liked the look of the cover. Although, the formatting was not like other covers. I continued inside the book and noticed that the chapters were not separated by its own page. Well, I thought this is different. But what really intrigued me was the information that is so informative that a 13 yr old could understand it. I am really happy and enthused to continue with my book and looking forward to publishing on .
