The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook Your Comprehensive Reference to the Best Herbs for Healing James A Duke 9781579541842 Books Reviews

  • We are trying to find alternatives to some medications which cause side effects. This handbook has been very helpful, and we always check with our doctor before adding any herb to our regimen. Our 9-year old granddaughter gets very car sick, and we read about ginger for motion sickness. Her doctor OK'd it, we bought some chewable "Ginger Trips" for her, and it worked like a charm. Please read the cautions for each herb, though, as some can be dangerous when combined with certain prescription meds such as blood thinners etc. Our pharmacist has also been very helpful in guiding us. Sure wish American medicine practiced more herbal treatments instead of prescriptions with sometimes very bad side effects.
  • This is the 6th or 7th herb book I have and my least favorite. It is a good herb book for beginners who need a basic introduction to common herbs. It provides a good overview of what the significant herbs are but doesn't provide really good information on each herb. I found that it misses key functions for many of the herbs and what they are known for and provides only a brief description or tidbits of information on the importance of the herb. The descriptions of the herbs do not cover in great detail which body part the herb is commonly used for.

The plus side was the book was easy to read and flip through. It was formatted well. However, this is not an authoritative book on herbs. I was expecting more and got much less than I was hoping more.
  • This book is very similar to the other herbal book by James A. Duke (The Green Pharmacy), except this book is divided by the herb name. In each herb description the author gives some information about where the herb comes from, it's therapeutic uses, medicinal propertieis, prescription counterparts, dosage options and precautions. If you are looking a book classified by the ailments, I would suggest you by the other book (The Green Pharmacy)
  • I am working with a Master Herbalist who is training me and this is one of several books recommended to me that I have purchased. The art of herbal remedies is a whole new world that is essential for anyone considering or now living off grid. I have gained so much knowledge in such a short time, and I have connected with local dealers that are purchasing bulk products that grow wild on my property. This same review applies to all of the herbal books I have purchased, I don't just recommend one but all of them for your library as a serious or novice herbalist!!!!
  • James Duke's book "The Green Pharmacy" was one of the first few I read about herbs used for healing. It still has a place in my bookcase. This book has much more complete information about the plants included, and seems more geared for the level at which I practice now. As a nurse and now a trained herbalist, I like the mention of pharmaceuticals used for the same treatment goals. The last 14 years, I have studied both herbs and prescription drugs extensively. Dr. Duke's scientific yet down to earth approach is greatly appreciated. This book will find use as a reference for both the pharmacology lectures I present, as well as those about healing with botanicals. My thanks to Dr. Duke for another winner.
  • Informative andb easy to follow. Provides dosages, parts of plants used, remedies for many things
  • great treatment of herbs, up to duke's usual incomparable standards. good price & shipping. good condition. i wish i could get to his world famous "6 acre herbal vineyard" at his house in fulton, maryland. i wish the gov't had been bright enough to put jim duke in charge of the fda, but then, that wouldn't have worked so well for the bottom line of BIG PHARMA! however, the rest of us would be healthier & there wouldn't be as great a deficit in the budget. just dreaming!
  • The format of the physical book is not my favorite---the Mass Market paperback is not my favorite. Gives good background for the herbs, not for things outside of that (Kelp, sea salt, calcium sources, etc)---so that's what the title is and doesn't disappoint. Practical application (e.g. Take 1/4 cup of yellow dock and 1 cup of water....) is not present, but that is not the purpose of the book.---good reference book!
